Little
Harbour is the home of Peter J. Johnston, Bronze Sculptor and son of
the late Professor and Sculptor Randolph W. Johnston who founded a unique
art foundry in a remote and beautiful area.
Located twenty miles south of Marsh Harbour, a few miles north of Cherokee settlement, Little Harbour was discovered by the Johnston family in the 50's while cruising on their Man-O-War built schooner, the Langosta. After struggling a few years to house his family, Mr. Johnston, a art professor of Canadian origin, built his own studio and art foundry as well as a ceramic studio for his wife and artist, Margot Johnston, in this isolated place. Some of her exquisitely painted pieces can be seen at the Johnston Studio. Thanks to his inventiveness, Randolph managed to build the different tools of his trade from the fruits of his beach combing and the use of boat wreckage to supply the bronze for his sculptures.
Richard Appaldo, a french artist who was a student of Professor Johnston in the mid 80's and helped in the completion of some famous works such as Sir Milo Butler, The Angel of Peace, the mural Nine Ages of Man and the famous St. Peter Fisher of Man at the Vatican museum, now assists Pete in the crafting of his sculptures. With a day's notice, Richard or Pete will give international visitors a guided tour of the foundry and explain how an inert mass of clay is is transmuted into a lively bronze sculpture - through a process which seems magical to the uninitiated. If you are lucky, it will be "casting day" and you can watch them pour bronze at 2200°F. With the same Lost Wax Process, Pete and Richard also craft some exquisite gold and silver jewelry. Pete or Richard would be delighted to design any custom jewelry that strikes your fancy... Visit the Art Gallery where the fruits of their labor are on display and the adjoining Museum where the work of Randolph W. Johnston can be viewed. After touring the harbour, you might want to walk up to the ancient lighthouse, guarding the Little Harbour pass to the Atlantic ocean or refresh yourself snorkeling on one of the many beaches in the area. On the North beach, surprise one of the green turtles sleeping under the coral or admire the leopard rays flying in formation above the gorgone forest. Go to the bight of Old Robinson and snorkel above one of the deep and strange blue holes.
